Guerlain Rose Barbare (01) Eyeshadow Palette ($69.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a pink and purple themed palette that contains five shades. I’m beyond disappointed in the formula that Guerlain created for their more recently released eyeshadow palettes; it is just so powdery, dusty, dry, and hard to use. I used it over primer, and it was still a total pain to apply and looked uneven, patchy, and faded. I felt like primer just made the mess wear longer, but it did little to make it look better, and I did try several types of primer. The only base that worked decently was a tackier, slightly wet base, which gave the powdery formula more to cling to.

Rose Barbare #1

Rose Barbare #1 is a very pale pink with a cooler shimmer and a warmer base (it looks cool-toned swatched on me but warmer in the pan) paired with a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it was thin and dusty, so it was prone to sheering out and had faded and creased after five hours of wear.

Rose Barbare #2 is a muted, medium-dark purple with neutral-to-warm undertones and a frost finish. It had good pigmentation with a slightly dusty texture, but it was denser than the other shades, so it was easier to work with. I still found it had faded significantly by five and a half hours.

Rose Barbare #3 is a muted, pinky mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation with a very dusty, powdery texture that felt dry and was hard to blend out on the skin, as so much disappeared but what stuck around went on unevenly and did not want to diffuse. This shade had creased after five hours of wear.

Rose Barbare #4 is a dark, plummy purple with subtle, warmer brown undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was so dry and thin, which made it a real pain to blend out as it turned patchy. I thought it would be improved over primer, but it applied just as badly. It had good pigmentation, but the texture was a total miss. It wore well for five and a half hours before creasing.

Rose Barbare #5 is a darker plum with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had sheer coverage, and a lot of that was due to the incredibly stiff, firmly pressed powder–it was hard to get any product off of the surface of the pan. Unsurprisingly, it blended terribly and applied unevenly (what little that made it). It showed signs of creasing after five hours of wear.
