Guerlain A La Parisienne Nail Lacquer ($23.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is an intense coral-red with a cream finish. Guerlain Champs-Elysees is pinker, cooler. Dior Merveille is more shimmery. Rescue Beauty Lounge Poppy is more shimmery, warmer. China Glaze Hey Sailor is cooler. Essie Too Too Hot is similar. Essie Silken Cord is cooler. See comparison swatches.

It’s incredibly pigmented and nearly opaque in one coat, but you’ll need two for full color coverage. It dries down a bit faster than the average polish, and it dries to a high gloss finish–no need for a top coat. The consistency isn’t too thick or too thin, so the polish spread well across the nail without streaking, bubbling, or pooling along the edges and was very easy to control during application. I only see very minor tip wear after wearing Guerlain’s polish for a week.

Will you be wearing your red, white, and/or blue on July 4th? I’m most likely going to sport a red lip, at the very least! Here are five of my picks for a little red-themed inspiration, and it was quite hard to narrow it down, because there are so many awesome red lipsticks and polishes in particular. So think of this as just a moment in time – surely if I picked a week from now, it would be different

Guerlain Les Ors Meteorites Perles Light Diffusing Primer

Guerlain Les Ors Meteorites Perles Light Diffusing Primer ($71.00 for 1.0 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a “sheer, luxurious makeup base” that utilizes gold pearls to brighten, illuminate, and help set makeup (but it can also be worn alone, if so desired). It’s ever-so-slightly peach-tinted with white, pink, and gold micro-shimmer (or pearl, if you like).

Products like this are hard to review, and they are always difficult for me to convey their true effect, because it gets lost in photos–in the sense that with softened, diffused lighting, I’m already getting the benefit of having nice lighting to begin with. I find in the horrors of everyday lighting that varies from room to room, place to place, the improvement is much more marked. There’s absolutely a difference, as the skin has a softer, smoother appearance that’s slightly brighter–fresher in a way–and any foundation I’ve tried it over lasts an extra hour and a half to two hours (I’ve tried this with Guerlain’s own Parure Gold, Parure de Lumiere, and Lingerie de Peau; as well as Make Up For Ever HD and Giorgio Armani Maestro). As a bonus, this seems to slightly minimize bits of redness that I get around my nose and on my cheeks.

Unlike a lot of primers on the market, though this has silicone-based ingredients in it, it doesn’t have that velvety, silicone-like feel, but it still does a great job of holding makeup in place. It’s also nice on its own, because it doesn’t have a matte, flat finish. It’s not a liquid highlighter by any means, and it works all-over the face because the pearl is barely-there. The texture is thin, water-like (but a bit thicker than pure water), and easy to spread and blend out on the skin. It dries down in thirty seconds or so. I’ve worn it alone a few times, and I’ve mixed it with my moisturizer and applied it that way. The only thing I’d say is that if you’re already using a slew of excellent smoothing products (like foundation, setting and/or finishing powders), at some point you’re just not going to get skin that looks any more than it already does. For instance, using pressed Meteorites gives me a similar radiance, but the primer extends wear of my base makeup more so than the powder does alone.

	It works fantastically as a primer or worn alone to give naked skin an added luminosity that's never shimmery, glittery, or emphasizes pores. It spreads well, and because of the lightweight, thin consistency, a little goes a long way. The only downside is the price tag, and potentially that it's limited edition, so if you really fall hard, it might not be around later on (and nobody likes basics that are limited edition!).

Guerlain Madame Rougit 4-Colours Blush

Guerlain Madame Rougit 4-Colours Blush ($67.00 for 0.28 oz.) is described as “raspberry, pale pink, beige, and coral” that are supposed to be used together to “illuminate and highlight” with a “velvety finish.” It contains shades of light-medium, slightly cool-toned pink with a soft, frosted sheen; barely-there pale pink (I couldn’t get this one to show up well individually at all); pink-coral with a matte finish; and an orange-coral with a subtle gold pearl. Swirled together, it creates a medium-dark pink-coral with subtle warm undertones and a barely-there satin finish–not totally matte but low shimmer. theBalm Argyle is lighter, cooler-toned. Edward Bess Bed of Roses is slightly cooler-toned. theBalm Frat Boy is warmer. MAC Divine Desire is more frosted, cooler-toned. Dior Pink Happiness is slightly warmer. Chanel Rose Initiale is similar. Benefit Bella Bamba is similar in color but very shimmery. See comparison swatches.

The texture is soft, finely-milled, and blendable on the skin, and I experienced the best texture, feel, and color payoff when everything was swirled together and applied. Individually, the shades were less impressive with some being decent and one being particularly sheer and a little dry. The description of the blush is somewhat contradictory, because it is called a blush, but then it’s for illuminating and highlighting, which would usually mean sheerer color, so it seems like it’s maybe a combination of both. Updated: The big thing I noticed is that the color payoff is much better after the raised circles get brushed down–I think it’s really the pattern that makes the payoff initially disappointing, because when your blush brush gets in there and in-between all the crevices, it’s not an issue applying it to the skin. Honestly, it doesn’t make sense the way it looks individually and then comes together with so much more color payoff.

The individual shades are not very large, so they don’t lend themselves well to individual application (and it is designed to be used together). I would say you’re be better off trying to use it as two halves, and then swirling and mixing as you please. If you want a cooler coloring, stay on the lower bottom shades; if you want something warmer, focus on the upper right of the palette. It lasted eight hours well on my skin when I wore it yesterday (you better believe I ripped open my order as soon as it was dropped off, ha!), and it had some faint signs of fading after nine hours. Because of the mostly matte finish, it did not emphasize pores, and as the texture was soft but not powdery, it sat quite nicely on the skin.

It comes in a glossy black, rectangular compact that opens with a full-size mirror underneath the lid, and then the blush compartment lifts up to reveal a pink-bristled, rounded brush. The whole thing comes with a “suedette pouch.” The powder is violet-scented, and it’s noticeable when I open the compact, but I didn’t notice it when applied. This palette definitely brings back memories of Blush G Serie Noire, and while there are some similarities (both are a blend of pink an coral), the finish is very, very different, as Blush G was a high-shimmer, high-frost product with a strong, golden sheen and a lighter pink base. Blush G was also more versatile and could easily be darkened or lightened, depending on which sections you applied from. The texture was also softer and more buttery–though this one is certainly soft and not at all stiff, it’s just a bit drier in a way. I like Blush G more, because I think it is more versatile, but I can see the more matte finish of Madame Rougit appealing to many. It’s disappointing, given Guerlain’s past face powders (many of which have become holy grails for people) and the price point.

P.S. — I’m going to keep playing with this one over the weekend, because I’m not having some of the issues that several of you have had. I’m concerned, as obviously that points to signs of inconsistent quality during production, and the last thing I’d want to do is recommend a product (well, I don’t recommend this!) that might be an outlier. I might even order a second one and see if that is better/worse. As always, thank you for sharing your experiences

Guerlain Madame Rougit 4-Colours Blush (with Guerlain Madame Flirte Lipstick)

Guerlain Two Stylish (02) Eyeshadow Duo / Ecrin 2 Coueleurs ($44.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “deep blue” and “metallic grey.” The duo comes in a narrow compact with two full-sized eyeshadows (actually, at 0.07 oz. a pop, they’re a bit larger than average, which is usually around 0.05 oz.) and a dual-ended sponge-tip applicator. Under the lid, a mirror spans the full length of it. I think I might of preferred a more square-shaped compact and left out the applicator, though the narrowness of the palette gives it a sleeker look. Guerlain describes the duos as having “one a pure color and one a luminous veil.” The more matte shade is supposed to be that “pure color” with “intense” color payoff, while the other is “a veil, a sparkly, or metallic texture that can add a layer of dazzling radiance.”

Two Stylish #1 is a cool-toned pewter–a little mix of gray and gold that comes out more gray than gold with a frosted, metallic finish. This is the “luminous veil” shade, and it had semi-opaque to mostly opaque color. It can be used with a lighter hand to achieve a more veil-like sheerness, but it’s fairly pigmented, which you may consider a happy accident or disappointment, depending on your preferences. The texture was soft, buttery, and very-nearly creamy. If you know me, you know I’m all for shades of pewter, and there are certainly a number of similar shades. Dior Constellation #2 is warmer. Tom Ford Emerald Lust #1 is lighter. MAC Vex has a violet duochrome. MAC Misty is lighter. Giorgio Armani #1 Spring 2012 #4 is similar. Giorgio Armani #19 is slightly warmer. Dior Garden Roses #4 is darker. See comparison swatches.

Two Stylish #2 looks midnight blue in the pan, but it had a surprisingly greenish-yellow undertone that made it appear more like a blue-teal (but with stronger blue coloring) when swatched. I think it may be bluer with less teal influence on cooler complexions. The finish is mostly matte–there seemed to be a very faint satin sheen when you looked at it closely, but it was primarily matte in appearance from afar. It had decent color payoff, but I wouldn’t describe it as intense. The texture was somewhat dry, which may have been what interfered with getting really rich, true-to-pan pigmentation. On the lid, I applied it with a fluffy crease brush, which helped to loosen more product and get better payoff on the lid, and it helped blend the product out without trouble. Disney Lapis is brighter. MAC Pre-Packaged is more shimmery. Illamasqua Burst is brighter, less blue. See comparison swatches.

The two colors work well together, and I can certainly see why someone might love it, but I can also see why someone wouldn’t find it worth the expense. I think it’s decent to good, but the blue shade needs more intensity to really live up to Guerlain’s description. It would create and enable more dimension, depth, and make it a more versatile duo if that were the case. I wore the palette over bare lids, and they wore well for eight hours with some minor fading of the blue shade becoming noticeable after nine hours of wear. Over primer (I used NARS’ Smudge Proof), I didn’t see any signs of wear after nine hours.

The palette is permanent and will be available across all Guerlain retailers this August.

Guerlain Madame Flirte (861) Rouge G Lipstick ($49.50 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “fruity red.” It’s a medium-dark, coral-red with a soft, pearly finish and warm undertones. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and it wore well for five and a half hours and was hydrating while worn. It lightly stains as it wears away. The consistency was lightly creamy and easy to apply. Chanel Dialogue is redder, darker. Revlon Wild Watermelon is very similar. Maybelline Shocking Coral is pinker, brighter. MAC Fusion Pink is iridescent. Guerlain Rouge Sensuel is redder. Guerlain Chamade is lighter, sheerer. See comparison swatches.

Madame Reve (862) Rouge G Lipstick ($49.50 for 0.12 oz.) is a soft, medium pink with subtle cool undertones and pearly finish. It had a soft sheen that gave it a luminous look. The color coverage was mostly opaque, and this shade lasted four and a half hours on me and was moisturizing while worn. . I sent an inquiry over to see if we can get clarification on this. MAC Pleasurefruit is brighter. Urban Decay Turn On is lighter, cool-toned. MAC Speak Louder is darker. MAC Plumful is less pink. See comparison swatches.

Guerlain Two Spicy Eyeshadow Duo

Guerlain Two Spicy Ecrin 2 Couleurs Eyeshadow Duo ($44.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as “spicy coral” and “ebony brown.” The coral shade is the “luminous veil,” whereas the brown shade is the “pure color shadow,” with the former being somewhat sheer and the latter being intensely pigmented. I was incredibly surprised–happily, though–that despite the amount of sparkle in the coral shade that there was very little fall out during wear. I had some when I initially applied the color to the lid, but little and then maybe one or two flecks were visible eight hours later (and no creasing or fading for either shade to report). The brown applied beautifully and was very easy to blend out on the lid. Overall, the colors work well with each other, but there is such a dramatic difference in texture that I’m not totally sold on the pairing, and I wish the coral shade was more flattering applied.

Two Spicy #1 is a medium orange with warm, reddish undertones and copper and gold sparkle. It had semi-opaque color payoff. It had a very unusual consistency, as it felt almost wet and like a cream product, though it is supposed to be a powder. It even pushes and dents in a little, as if it were a drier cream. It looked noticeably frosted and sometimes bunched up on itself on the lid, looking like chunks of sparkle on the lid. Applied with a fluffier brush, you would eliminate this issue but would get more of a wash of color. MAC Hot Paprika is similar but less sparkly. Guerlain Terra Azzurra #3 is pinker–more coral. Two Spicy #2 is a dark, chocolate brown with subtle, warm yellow undertones and a mostly matte finish. It was nicely opaque and easy to apply–soft, finely-milled, and blendable. Bobbi Brown Chocolate is more shimmery. Urban Decay Snakebite is warmer, lighter. MAC Cross-Cultural is similar. MAC Brown Down is more matte. See comparison swatches.

Guerlain Madame Batifole (860) Gloss d’Enfer Maxi Shine

Guerlain Voilette de Madame Gloss d’Enfer Maxi Shines ($30.00 for 0.20 fl. oz. each) includes three limited edition shades. This gloss formula is lightweight, shimmery, non-sticky, and wears an average of three to four hours. According to Guerlain, it comes in “varying degrees of coverage and pigment intensity.” All three shades were semi-sheer with slight settling into lip lines, and because they are on the sheerer side, they tended to look more alike applied than not. They have a thin, almost gel-like consistency that has some slip but doesn’t slide around. It has a medium shine, and the formula (and all three of these in particular) is nicely hydrating. The formula has a floral scent but no discernible taste and comes in a flat, clear tube with a slanted doe-foot applicator.

Madame Batifole (860) is described as an “electric sparkling fuchsia.” It’s a slightly cool-toned fuchsia with violet shimmer. In the tube, it has more of a berry coloring, but on lips, it’s pinker and against my skin tone, almost looks warm sometimes. The coverage is mostly even with very, very slight settling into (some) lip lines–completely unnoticeable from a normal viewing distance. It lasted three and a half hours on me. Revlon Sugar Violet is lighter. Revlon Berry Allure is similar. MAC Dress Kimono is cooler-toned. L’Oreal Dazzle Me is more fuchsia. Chanel Pink Pulsion is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches.

Madame Flirte (861) is described as a “gourmand sparkling red.” It’s a muted, pink-red with lightly warm undertones and pink and gold shimmer. Applied, it seemed to look even pinker (which can be heavily influenced by your natural lip color). It had semi-sheer color coverage, and it did have some light settling into lip lines (noticeable in the close-up but less so from afar). It is more similar than not compared to Madame Batifole. It lasted three and a half hours on me. Revlon Berry Allure is similar, less shimmery. Burberry Hibiscus is less shimmery. Bobbi Brown Electric Violet is lighter, sheerer. See comparison swatches.

Madame Fascine (863) is described as a “sparkling deep purple.” In the tube, it looks like a smoldering, purpled burgundy with violet, fuchsia, and copper shimmer; swatched, it’s a brownish-plum with multi-colored shimmer. Applied, it’s similar to how it appears swatched–a brownish-plum, some shimmer, glossy shine. This seemed even glossier than other shades in the range. It lasted four hours when I tried it. MAC Spice is more opaque, creamier. MAC Get Rich Quick is more sparkly. MAC Looks Like Sin is less shimmery. Bobbi Brown Aubergine is purpler. See comparison swatches.

Guerlain Amber Silver (05) Eye Pencil ($30.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “silver.” It’s more like a silver-shimmered, brownish taupe color with a frosted, metallic finish. It was creamy and had semi-opaque color payoff in a single pass, and it was buildable to mostly opaque color but not fully opaque. It’s the type of color that looks great on the lower lash line to brighten and open up eyes with something more defining than beige. It lasted well for seven hours, and after eight, it looked slightly thinner but did not gather into the corners or smudge. Urban Decay Stray Dog is much darker, as is Urban Decay Mushroom. MAC Catch My Eye is more silver. See comparison swatches.

Black Jack (01) Eye Pencil ($30.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “black.” It’s a deep black with a semi-matte finish. It had good color payoff in a single stroke, and it was buildable to fully opaque color. The consistency was creamy, so the pencil glided on easily without skipping or tugging at the lash line. It wore well for eight and a half hours, and it even managed the water line for six and a half hours. It started to thin slightly but still looked quite nice after ten hours of wear–and no smudging or migration. It’s a basic black eyeliner, which is essential for each brand to have within their range, but it also means there are plenty of similar shades on the market.

It’s a new (but permanent) formula for fall. It looks like a pencil eyeliner, but it is retractable and comes with a plastic sharpener that pops off on the opposite end of the pencil tip. There is slightly less waste compared to your traditional pencil eyeliner, as you do not have to sharpen the full edge away, but you do get 0.01 oz. (compared to 0.04 oz. of a regular pencil eyeliner).

Guerlain Parure de Lumiere Foundation ($59.00 for 1.0 fl. oz.) is supposed to be moisturizing, light-diffusing, and have medium coverage with a “sheer satin” finish. It’s available in a mere eight shades (which continues to be Guerlain’s biggest weakness with their foundations–a lack of shade range). It is recommended for normal, dry, and combination skin types (note, oily was not listed).

I’m usually between 02 Beige Clair and 03 Beige Naturel in Guerlain’s foundations, and it was no different with Parure de Lumiere. I used one pump of each shade for light-medium coverage all-over. To get more medium coverage, I used one and a half pumps of each shade. 02 Beige Clair is mostly neutral with beige undertones, whereas 03 Beige Naturel has moderately strong yellow undertones. When 02 Beige Clair is blended out on my skin, it actually looks almost pink-toned. I really wish the shade range was larger, but I don’t expect so (their newest foundation just popped up on Nordstrom with only six shades!).

Parure de Lumiere is a lightweight, long-wearing, skin-smoothing foundation that makes skin appear natural, radiant, and luminous without looking oily or greasy. The coverage is buildable from sheer to medium, though it lends itself naturally to a light-medium to medium application. For sheer coverage, I spritz my brush with a little water, and then I work the foundation across the skin; this enables me to get the sheerest coverage all-over and then build up coverage in the areas I need it most. I’ve been using this foundation on and off since November 2012, so I’ve had ample opportunity to use it under various skin conditions, seasons (though “seasons” in California are obviously less meaningful), and with many tools. I like applying it with fingertips quite a bit, and sponges work well, too. I really liked using Tom Ford Cream Foundation Brush with this, as well as Hourglass #2 Foundation Brush. There hasn’t been a brush I’ve used with this that hasn’t done an admirable job of applying it, really; it’s not a tricky product to apply at all.

The consistency isn’t too thick or too thin, and it spreads well across the skin and looks very natural when it dries down. It’s not so dewy that it looks oily or wet, but it is definitely a more luminous finish, which is why I can see it not being recommended for oilier skin types. It is also somewhat hydrating, but it certainly wouldn’t replace your full-time moisturizer; it is one of the more forgiving foundations on dry patches and flakiness–especially after a half hour or so, as it absorbs into the skin. It lasts eight and a half hours well on my skin, but if I set with powder, I get closer to ten hours of wear. The only downside (which isn’t that bad) is that it takes a little longer to dry down on its own if you don’t apply powder.

Guerlain Crazy Paris Eye Palette ($86.00 for 0.37 oz.) contains four eyeshadows and two powder liners (each containing about 0.06 oz., which is larger than the average full-sized eyeshadow–typically 0.05 oz.). It actually contains a lot more product than the permanent Ecrin 6 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palettes ($86.00 for 0.25 oz.). The powder liner shades can be used wet or dry. This palette is best suited for someone who tends to like their eyeshadows to have very soft textures and somewhat soft color–only the copper and black shades are very pigmented, the rest are less so. When I wore them together, the overall look was light and muted. The more pigmented shades lasted well for nearly nine hours, while the less pigmented ones were slightly faded by nine hours.

Crazy Paris #1 is a bright, golden copper with strong orange and yellow undertones and a frosted, metallic finish. It had a really soft, buttery texture that applied smoothly with excellent color payoff. This was the best eyeshadow in the palette. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #10 (P) is very similar. Maybelline Breaking Bronze (LE, $6.99) is less frosted. MAC Brownluxe #3 (P) is yellower. NARS Isolde #1 (P, $24.00) is darker. MAC Retrospeck #2 (LE) is browner. MAC Campfire (LE) is darker, browner. Guerlain Calligraphy #2 (LE) is a touch less metallic. bareMinerals Bragging Rights (LE) is more orange. See comparison swatches.

Crazy Paris #2 is a golden beige with a metallic sheen. It had so-so color payoff, though the texture was soft and finely-milled. Disney by Sephora Sea Shells (LE) is similar. MAC Vanilla (P, $15.00) is more matte. MAC Dazzlelight (P, $15.00) is less metallic. Benefit Bikini-tini (P, $20.00) is a cream product. See comparison swatches.

Crazy Paris #3 is a subtly cool-toned, silve-white with a frosted, metallic finish. It had good pigmentation, though it wasn’t not as opaque as the copper eyeshadow. The texture was very soft. Dior Lune (001) (P, $30.00) is a cream product. Disney by Sephora Midnight Hour #1 (LE) is less metallic. theBalm Sassy (P) is less metallic. theBalm Metal-ica (P) is less metallic. NARS Flowers 3 #1 (LE) is similar. MAC Crystal Avalanche (P, $15.00) is cooler-toned, less metallic. See comparison swatches.

Crazy Paris #4 is a medium-dark pink with silver and white sparkle. It had semi-sheer color payoff, and the texture was somewhat sparkly, so it wasn’t as smooth. This shade was prone to fall out both during application and later on during wear. Wet ‘n’ Wild Your 15 Minutes Aren’t Up #3 (LE) is more matte. CoverGirl Fired-up Pink (305) (P, $4.99) is more sparkly. Urban Decay Noise (LE) is less sparkly, cooler-toned. MAC Tease with Ease (P, $21) is more satiny. MAC Brash & Bold (LE, $21.00) is brighter, less sparkly. Guerlain Terra Azzurra #2 (LE) is more matte but very, very similar in color. Dior Bow (887) (P, $29.00) is darker, less sparkly. Crazy Paris #5 is a medium-dark, neutral-warm gray with a mostly matte finish. Dry, it is fairly sheer and so soft that it does turn a bit powdery. Wet, it comes together better, but it is only semi-opaque. MAC Smokeluxe #4 (P) is more shimmery. Urban Decay Ace (LE) is darker, more shimmery. MAC Interior Life (LE) is lighter. Crazy Paris #6 is a rich, deep black with a matte finish. It is very soft and finely-milled, so it can get somewhat powdery. Applied wet, it is less powdery and about the same in depth of color. Of course, this shade is easier to dupe than the others. Guerlain Sulfurous Nail Lacquer ($23.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep, artificial black with particles of violet.” It’s a dark, plummy black-brown with burgundy and violet shimmer and a slightly metallic finish. Urban Decay Wrecked (LE) is a cream finish. MAC Blueblood (LE, $16.00) is also a cream. Chanel Western Light (LE, $27.00) is darker, less shimmery. Cult Nails Enigmatic (LE, $12.00) is lighter, purpler. China Glaze Jungle Queen (LE, $8.00) is lighter, purpler. See comparison swatches.

There were slight visible brush strokes to the resulting finish, though they were not noticeable from afar–only up-close and under a lot of light. It had fairly good shine without a top coat, and two coats yielded fully opaque color. The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it spread evenly and easily without pooling along the edges. Guerlain’s lacquer has a larger, wider brush, which works really well for spreading one coat across the entire nail in one stroke (which does help to minimize unevenness and streaking). I wasn’t able to come up with a really great dupe for this, so I definitely loved adding something more unique to my stash, and the only negative was that there were a few visible brush strokes.

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire So Crazy! Perfumed Shimmer Powder ($89.00 for 0.61 oz.) is a shimmering, pale pink powder scented with a sweet cherries and creamy almond. It’s a decadent, luxurious vanity treat–by no means a must-have, but it’s a nice-to-have if you go out and dress in little black dresses. The way the shimmer dances in the light is exquisite–really–and it dances, glimmers, and sparkles all at once and looks quite lovely on the body (shoulders, decolletage, legs). The shimmer is like micro-sparkle; larger than shimmer, smaller than sparkle and glitter. On the face, I think it can be too over-the-top unless you love sparkle, but it’s a product that works really well in hair, on arms, shoulders, legs, and so on.

One spray held about six to eight inches away, and the result is a light dusting of fairy dust all over the skin. One spray held closer to the skin (one to inches away) will yield more concentrated shimmer and color. To get a heavier swatch of product, I sprayed twice close to the skin, so you can see the bluish-pink color base of the product, but it’s virtually translucent when applied normally.

Guerlain Crazy Meteorites Radiance Powder ($69.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a pale, pearlescent pink-tinged translucent powder. It brightens and adds a subtle luminosity to the skin all-over. It also extended the wear of my foundation by an hour and a half, though that’s more of a bonus, as the brand’s description says nothing about improving wear. The pan uses a combination of pink, beige, lavender, and mint green, but the effect of the color swirled is a pale, cool-toned pink. I think the effect is comparable to Hourglass Mood Light, perhaps a bit more luminous.

Technically, Guerlain labels this as a “Radiance Powder” for the face, whereas past iterations of the pressed Meteorites formula are “Exceptional Pressed Powder.” This even contains significantly more product at 0.35 oz., as compared to 0.26 oz. for the Meteorites Voyage / Exceptional Pressed Powders. I really couldn’t detect any difference in texture or effect between the two formulas. Except the most obvious: more bang for your buck, because the permanent Mythic will cost you $55 just for the pan ($170 for the compact and pan). It brightens, softens the look of skin, and adds back a natural luminosity that gives skin a natural look. It works all-over, and on my medium complexion, it didn’t look chalky despite its cooler pink tone. Like other Guerlain powders, it is violet-scented.

I bought this when it popped up late last week on Nordstrom, because ever since falling in love with Wulong (last year’s Meteorites compact) and finding Mythic (part of the permanent range) equally impressive, I knew that there would be no way I’d skip this year’s. I’m glad I didn’t, because here’s why Meteorites are addictive: when I walked by my husband after applying this all over my face, he said, “Hey, you look really beautiful right now.” This after having passed him a dozen or more times, and all I had on was foundation and then used the Crazy Meteorites all-over to set and finish (no eyeshadow, blush, or lip color). I kid you not, as I was working through other swatches, he came over so he could look upon my beauty. So yes, Crazy Meteorites might make people go crazy around you.

Holiday Indulgences

One question I get asked a lot prior to Sephora’s winter sale (20% off for VIBs with code VIBTOPIA, 11/7 through 11/11!) is, “What do you recommend?” This is a loaded question! Long-time readers will know that Guerlain is easily one of my favorite brands. A lot of my very favorite products are by the brand, from foundation to finishing powder to lipstick. If we threw limited edition shades into the mix, there’d be even more favorites to be found. If you’re new to the brand and aren’t sure where to start, let me share with you my five must-have products…

Guerlain Meteorites — pressed or loose pearls, they’re a cult favorite for a reason. I prefer the pressed as a finishing powder to add subtle luminosity back into the skin. If you like a little more shimmer and sparkle, I’d opt for the loose pearls.
Guerlain Rouge G Lip Color — it’s been a non-stop winner for my very, very favorite lipstick formula for years; long-wearing, hydrating, smoothing, and good variety of colors. Guerlain’s strength, for me, has always been in base and lip products.
Guerlain Le Vernis — incredibly glossy (without a top coat), highly pigmented, and long-wearing–I love the cream finishes best.
Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain L’Extrait — long-wearing, intensely pigmented, matte lip color
Guerlain Parure de Lumiere — foundation is another strength by the brand, as I haven’t encountered one I didn’t like (and my favorite, Parure Gold, is now discontinued), and every time I wear Parure de Lumiere, a reader asks about my skin care routine. The major downside is they have a limited shade range.

Guerlain Tenue de Perfection Foundation

Guerlain Tenue de Perfection Foundation ($59.00 for 1.0 fl. oz.) is the latest foundation from Guerlain, which debuted earlier this fall. It has a limited shade range–a mere six to choose from–which is typical for Guerlain, but it can’t go without noting, as a greater and more expansive shade range would go a long way. I have Beige Clair (02), which is about half a shade too light; I’m normally between 02 and 03 in Guerlain’s foundations and typically mix to get the right shade for my skin tone.

It’s supposed to wear for a heart-stopping 16 hours with “ultimate coverage and comfort.” Some of the longest-wearing foundations I’ve tried have heavier, clingier formulas that tend to be unflattering on drier skin types (but good fits for oilier skin types). The texture of this was surprisingly lightweight, and the dry down was semi-matte to just shy of a truly natural finish. It was buildable to medium coverage; one pump yielded light-medium coverage, a pump and a half more like medium coverage. Two pumps was getting closer to full coverage, but it didn’t feel heavy worn that way. The formula evened out my skin tone and left my skin looking semi-matte.

I have normal-to-dry skin, closer to normal at this time, and my t-zone can get shiny towards the end of the day. After 16 hours of wear, it was surprising to find it still looked decent; I wouldn’t say it lasts 16 hours immaculately, but it seemed to fade evenly, so it didn’t look patchy or completely gone in places. It was as if my medium-coverage application went to light-medium coverage along my t-zone. I would say that on my skin type, it wore beautifully for 10 hours (without setting powder!), which was still impressive, though certainly not the full 16 as promised. When I set lightly with powder, it wore nearly perfectly for 12-13 hours, and it looked somewhat better after 16 hours than it did without any powder.

There are some brands and formulas that just seem to work well for me, and Guerlain’s foundations are definitely some of my favorites–I haven’t met one I didn’t like, and quite frankly, readers never ask me more frequently what foundation I’m wearing than when I’m wearing Guerlain. Again, I wish they had more shades, because it’s a very limited selection–very, very fair complexions will probably find the lightest (12) a bit too dark, and if you’re much past medium, there’s probably no shade match.

	There are a lot of things to love about this foundation--beautiful dry down, great coverage, lightweight and comfortable on the skin--but it does promise 16 hours of wear, and it just doesn't get there. Compared to a lot of foundations, it is longer-wearing than many I've tried, though. I liked that it seemed to fade evenly as it made its way to 16 hours--it never turned patchy or disappeared entirely. I wish they hadn't made such an extravagant claim!

Guerlain Les Voilettes Translucent Compact Powder ($56.00 for 0.22 oz.) is described as an “ultra-absorbent blend [that] perfectly sets makeup and adorns skin in a matte veil.” It’s a sheer, tinted powder that mattifies the skin–my skin looks like the smoothest velvet after applying over foundation. The texture is incredibly finely-milled, silky smooth, and blends easily across the skin. I used shade Medium, and it only comes in four shades–Light, Intense, and Dore are the other three.

I’ve used it primarily with Guerlain Tenue de Perfection, and it increased the longevity of that foundation by two to three hours. The most stunning aspect of this powder is really how much smoother and pore-less the skin looked after applying a light veil of product. This powder is a touch darker than my skin tone, but as the foundation I often used it with was slightly too light for me, the two worked perfectly together to give me a really nice shade match. (This is also something I’ve done in the past with Guerlain’s Les Voilettes loose powder.) It’s a very close match to my arm when I swatched it, so it may be difficult to see it there, but I think you can easily just how smooth and velvety this makes the skin look in the photos below, which is really what its purpose.

Guerlain’s Spring 2014 Météorites Blossom collection celebrates the reinvention of the legendary Météorites Pearls, whose light-diffusing properties minimize flaws and add brightness to the skin. More than 25 years after its invention, Météorites Pearls emerges with new constellations of colors to revive light and boost radiance. For the first time ever, Météorites Pearls incorporates Guerlain’s new, revolutionary ―Stardust Technology, a spherical pigment contained within each pearl. This formulation diffracts light upon contact to offer the ultimate in luminous skin. Météorites Blossom celebrates this revolutionary technology, as well as the romantic colors of the new constellations, through images of light and infinite radiance.

Each shade of Météorites Pearls begins with the same legendary combination of 3 colors which adapt to every skin tone and collectively work to beautify skin: mauve catches the light, pink refreshes and yellow counters dullness and corrects redness. These delicate and perfectly round pearls continue to be shaped by hand, with craftsmanship mastered by only 4 people in the world. Softer than ever, the new pearls allow for an even easier application and a more visible effect with every brushstroke. These precious pearls are contained in a beautiful metal tin, now marked with a new emblem of a reinterpreted rosette created with a light gradation of pink.
